In this edition of #GlueCrew Stories, meet the member of our team who drives the finance function of the company facilitating growth in all departments, Sandeep Kumar, IT Glue’s VP of Finance.
How did you end up in your position here?
I used to work in managed services, but decided to look for a change. When I came across IT Glue, it seemed like a good match. I started out as a Financial Controller just over two years ago, and have since moved into the role of VP of Finance.
What do you enjoy most about working here?
Our Core Values are what attracted me to the company originally, and that we’re consistently living those out. Along with that, a sense of accomplishment. I’ve enjoyed building a department from scratch, hiring, and creating processes. We also have an awesome group of people and a great culture here.
What are you most proud of in regards to the company and yourself?
Accomplishment and growth. It’s great to see the finance function of the company working well, and for the company to be in the financial position of being able to fuel further growth.
What challenges have you faced along the way?
We have a small team, so being able to stay on top of everything all at once in a company growing as quickly as ours can be challenging at times, but we are hiring right now for a Senior Accountant, hint, hint.
What’s something people don’t know about you?
There’s a lot! I’m really into fantasy sports because it’s a numbers game. I actually won 2nd-place in the entire world for fantasy hockey. It’s real players, real-life results, and just understanding statistics and trends. You act like a manager of a team – actually, this is kind of how I got into accounting. I dreamt of being the Canucks GM. I think I can do a much better job than Jim Benning!
What inspires you?
The pursuit and drive to succeed at everything I ever do.
Who are you outside of work?
I’ve got a sense of humour, and am a bit of jokester outside of the office. I really enjoy board games and video games, along with long walks… in the city. I was never into hiking in the mountains or walking on a beach, but I like to hike through the city. One time I walked from my home in Burnaby to Stanley Park, which took well over 3 hours. I then decided to walk back. I think that was pushing it a bit too much, though.
What advice would you give to colleagues?
Understand your worth. There’s often a lot more to you than you realize, so don’t sell yourself short. Ultimately, just have confidence and learn to communicate well.
